“THE SAME SKY” JOINS THE LINE-UP OF WORLD PREMIERE TV SCREENINGS AT MIPCOM 2016 BETA FILM/UFA FICTION TO SHOWCASE BERLIN COLD WAR FAMILY DRAMA

14 Sep 2016

Paris, 14 September 2016 – “The Same Sky,” a multi-layered family drama set in the divided Berlin of the 1970s, joins the prestigious line-up of MIPCOM 2016 World Premiere TV Screenings. The global entertainment content market, MIPCOM takes place in Cannes, France, from 17-20 October. The World Premiere TV Screening for “The Same Sky” is scheduled for Monday 17 October in the Palais des Festivals at 6:30 pm.

“The Same Sky” is directed by Academy Award-nominated Oliver Hirschbiegel (“Billions”, “Downfall”), and was created and written by multi-award winning British screenwriter Paula Milne (“The Politician’s Wife”, “The Virgin Queen”, “Endgame”). The six hour series stars Tom Schilling (“Generation War”), Sofia Helin (“The Bridge”), Friederike Becht (“The Reader”) and Ben Becker (“Comedian Harmonists”).

“The Same Sky” centers around the relationship between an East German agent and his target in the West, the woman he has to seduce for the sake of his country – a relationship driven by passion but built on deceit. The series recreates the uniquely charged atmosphere in the Cold War city by portraying the fates of two families, one on each side of the wall, in a tale interweaving East German dissidents and informers and West German hustlers and agents, as well as American and British diplomats. Divided by ideology, the only thing the people of Berlin all share is the sky above.

“The Same Sky” is an UFA FICTION / Beta Film production for ZDF in co-production with Mia film in association with Rainmark Films.

The MIPCOM screening will be followed by a Q&A with writer / creator Paula Milne, the leading cast members Sofia Helin, Friederike Becht and Tom Schilling as well as the producers of Ufa, Beta and Rainmark.

For Paula Milne, creator and writer: “'The Same Sky' is about divided families in a divided city. It is the timeless story of ordinary people caught up in an extraordinary time – and the choices they are forced to make”.

Beta Film CEO Jan Mojto declares: “''The Same Sky' combines European talent: Paula Milne as an exceptional British creator/writer, German born director Oliver Hirschbiegel and an international cast headed by Sofia Helin and Tom Schilling. The show represents a new step in the partnership with UFA’s Nico Hofmann, following in the footsteps of Generation War”.

UFA Co-CEO Nico Hofmann adds: “With 'The Same Sky', Jan Mojto and I follow our deep passion to create television event-series for the international market. The compelling thriller combines an international approach of drama story telling with our true desire to tell stories set in our domestic history and cultural heritage. We truly believe that this business-model is the future of Grand Great Televison”.

“We are delighted to add ‘The Same Sky’ to an already rich line-up of MIPCOM 2016 World Premiere TV Screenings. Beta Film is an independent European producer/distributor with genuine global reach, and MIPCOM should provide the perfect stage for the launch of its latest high-end series,” said Laurine Garaude, Director of Reed MIDEM’s Television Division.
