Wind energy theme day at COMPOSITES EUROPE 2015

19 Aug 2015

The wind energy industry is one of the fastest growing consumers of composite materials such as GRP and CRP, and the capacity of European plants is growing continuously. COMPOSITES EUROPE 2015 is thus dedicating a theme day to this sector. On Thursday 24 September, the trade fair will host a wind energy forum and a special themed tour focusing on the construction of wind power plants.

In particular, the increasing length of rotor blades is currently presenting the industry with major challenges in terms of production processes. The demands on manufacturers are complex - key research areas include the processing of fibre composites and weight reduction through new material mixtures, the guarantee of long-term operational stability and weather resistance, as well as the design and development of new, larger rotor blades.

XXL rotor blades in focus

In the COMPOSITES Forum (the fair's lecture forum) exhibitors and industry experts will report on various challenges and solutions. "Challenges in design, production and logistics of a very large rotor blade" is the title of a lecture to be given by Dr Christian Vogl (Nordex SE). Dr Alexander Krimmer (EUROS development company for wind turbines) will talk about "Potential and limits for composites in rotor blades". Karl Eichler (SSP Technology A/S) is also dedicating his lecture to the big blades: "How to bridge advanced blade design with reliable production processes of XXL Blades", and Dr Lars Rommel (Schütz GmbH & Co. KGaA) will conclude the forum on wind power with "Way to the rotor blade".

The subsequent networking reception (registration required) will offer visitors the opportunity to interact with the speakers and industry peers.

Guided tour of the fair - register now

Around one third of the 450 exhibitors at COMPOSITES EUROPE provides materials and processing solutions for the wind energy sector. As part of a guided tour of the fair with selected exhibitors, visitors will receive exclusive product previews and an overview of the tools used in rotor blade production, modern cutting technologies and software solutions. Participation in the guided tour is free for visitors and will begin on 24 September at 13:00. The number of participants is however limited - you can register now via the COMPOSITES EUROPE website.
